When I know I'm a mum

My sleeping beauty/baby

You read about stories involving children where everything goes wrong at the same time. Your toddler spills juice then the baby starts crying while dinner is burning kind of scenario. (This post from Rachel Jankovic is a hilarious example.) I thought that wouldn't happen until I had at least two kids. But I tasted a little bit of that yesterday night (or more like early this morning).

I woke up to the sound of Hazzy's usual mumblings. It was 4:30am. I hoped that he would fall back to sleep again. But then he began coughing which upset him and started wailing. I quickly went to his room and gave him a cuddle. But he was so upset by the waking of his deep slumber that he couldn't be consoled. So I breastfed him, which always works. While I'm breastfeeding, I noticed that the lights from the humidifier was blinking, telling me that the water tank is empty. I thought that was strange when I'd filled it up to the brim yesterday night. Hazzy became calm so I put him in bed. He still seemed a bit unhappy but looked like he would fall asleep. I picked up the water tank from the humidifier and the water splashed. I got a rag to wipe the mess up when I noticed there was way too much water where the humidifier was. Then I realised what had happened. The lid of the water tank hadn't been closed properly, making the water gush out from the machine. To my horror, the whole dresser, where the humidifier was placed, was soaked. Just then, Hazzy coughed and started crying again. I ran to the kitchen and got his water bottle. That seemed to settle him. So I started wiping the dresser and the carpet under the dresser. Then I realised the clothes inside the dresser were completely soaked as well. Then I noticed that Hazzy was suspiciously too happy. I find that he has spilled the water from his bottle all over his sleeping bag. I quickly grab the water bottle from him and try to wipe off the water. Hazzy got upset that I took his bottle so I give him a toy. I continue to wipe the carpet around the dresser. Ahhh~~~ I couldn't handle this at 4:30 in the morning. I stuffed the wet rags in the washing machine and decided I'd deal with the wet clothes tomorrow. Hazzy started sucking his fingers, meaning he is ready to sleep again so I went back to my room. Hubby was peacefully sleeping, as if to say, 'Did anything happen?'. I snuggle up beside him to steal some warmth and close my eyes. I knew at that moment that, 'Yes, I am a mum, for sure.'
