We went to our first home education expo today. It was a small scale expo called the Raising Happy Kids Expo. Just talking to some people who are passionate about education and supporting parents in this journey was so encouraging. Both Tim and I feel so fortunate that we are able to start this home schooling journey and excited about what lies ahead. It finally feels like it's becoming a reality now.
We've been easing into homeschooling for over a year now. After reading a blog post from another homeschooling mama who encouraged those who were thinking of homeschooling to just give it a try and see how it goes, I decided to try a few things. I chose the ABC Jesus Loves Me curriculum because it was bible-based, play-based and free, and just started implementing one thing every couple of weeks. I first started with just doing the bible stories and craft in the morning. Once that was established I began the letters and numbers. I also started incorporating other things like gross motor skills and fine motor skills in their daily play time. Next year, when Hazzy starts Kindy, we will have to bring in more structured learning into the day.
I found it takes a while to get used to the curriculum and discover your family's rhythm. And with changes in the family (like a new baby!) we had to alter some things, as well. But the great thing about it is that you can be flexible. Try new things, if it doesn't work, try something else. The key is to keep on trying and be intentional.
Even if you aren't planning to homeschool, it's great to be part of your child's learning. Like the excitement you felt when you first saw your baby take that first step to walk, you will feel the thrill of seeing your child's mind expand. Here are a few websites that can give you some ideas to try with your children today.
