Respecting my little man

Hazzy has learned a new form of expressing himself. Screaming.
I must admit I was shocked at first. Hazzy has always been a quiet little soul. He didn't cry much, didn't even laugh much. A serene smile was all he showed us most of the time. Everyone said that he looked so calm, just like his parents. Well, just like I have a craziness in me that people don't know about, Hazzy is showing his assertiveness in him as well.

But my son's screaming has earned my respect. Yesterday, Hazzy was happily eating his rusk. He came to the part that was close to his fingers so couldn't eat the bottom part. I reached out to help him grab the lower part of the rusk. Hazzy screamed and wouldn't let go. I realised I've done a very rude thing. I just tried to grab something out of his hand without asking him. I mean, I would feel very insulted if someone suddenly grabbed my food from my hand.

As little as Hazzy may be, he is still a person. Although he may depend on me for many things he is still a separate human being. I realised I need to treat him as such. That means telling him I'm going to change his nappy before I lay him down on the change mat. Telling him it's bath time before I take off his clothes. Talking to him during meal times. In some ways this seems obvious, but how easily we forget just because they are little.

So as loud as it may be, I'm glad that my baby started screaming. It reminded me that God gave me this little baby, not to lord it over him, but to serve him with a humble heart. Besides, it's all worth it when they give you that sweet, sweet smile.

Hazzy may be little, but he's still a MAN.
