3 Things to buy at Korean shops

Hazel, promoting Korean toothpastes

Shopping at a Korean shop isn't cheap. Their products are usually twice as more expensive than what you would pay for in Korea. But we shop there anyway since that's the only way we can quench our Kimchi cravings. Thankfully, hubby and I are both not 'hardcore Korean' so we don't need to have Korean food for every meal.

However, there are some things that are actually cheaper to buy in Korean shops than your Woolworths or Coles. And we're not talking low quality stuff here. South Korea is a developed country, home of companies like Samsung, LG and Hyundai. These products are safe to use and of good quality.

1. Toothpastes

A pack of 160g toothpaste costs $1.50 in Korean shops whereas 110 - 120g Colgate toothpastes will sell for this price at Woolworths or Coles only on specials. But make sure you choose mint flavoured ones if you aren't adventurous, because some toothpastes use traditional ingredients like salt that might not be too appealing for those who are not used to them.

2. Ice Cream Bars

You know when after eating out with your friends you feel like ice cream? Instead of dishing out $3.00 in ice cream bars, head to the nearest Korean shops. You can buy single ice cream bars for 50c to $1.00 compared to Magnum or Haggan-Dazs bars that costs twice as much in Woolies. And they have heaps of flavours as well. Melon, sweet corn, sweet potato, red beans, you name it.

3. Tofu

Woolworths and Coles have tofu in their dairy section, but I found them to be smaller and crumbling. Korean shops sell 500g tofu for $2.60 whereas Woolies sell 300g tofu for $2.50. Need I say more?

So next time you are in Strathfield for Korean BBQ, venture into one of the Korean supermarkets and pick up these items.

Do you have any suggestions on what you should get at Korean shops?
