How to enjoy going to the library with kids again
Kids love libraries. Heck, I love libraries. But these days, the kids started gravitating towards the DVD area, rather than the books area like I had hoped. And of course, the 3 year old girl wants to borrow everything with Emma Wiggle in it, while the 5 year old boy, overwhelmed by too many choices, doesn't know what to get. And so the peaceful picture of me reading to my children at the library is replaced by negotiations of what they could or could not watch and how many they are allowed to borrow. Something had to change.
The answer came in the form of Dr. Seuss. We have several Dr. Seuss books at home, but of course when my boy discovered the list of Dr. Seuss books in the back of the cover that we haven't read yet, well, he simply had to get all of them. When he spotted the familiar 'Cat in the Hat' logo on some of the books in the library, he got very excited. So we started reserving books in Dr. Seuss's series and this made Hazzy excited about our weekly library visits. We've now added Elmer and Mr. McGee to our reading series.
I find reading book series helpful as it develops the characters without having to read long chapter books. The books are short enough to retain the attention of our 3 year old, while reading other books in the same series helps my 5 year old make connections and form a deeper understanding of the characters involved and how the story evolves.
So now we are on the roll again with this reading thing. And today, we even came home from our library trip without any DVDs, just books. What are some children's book series that your kids enjoy? I'd love to add them to our book list.
